Join APPEAL for a Field Trip to Pocahontas Island — 70 acres in the middle of the Appomattox River in Petersburg, Va — A stop on the underground railroad, the oldest established African American town in the United States, founded by free Africans in 1752, and the Birthplace of the first President of Liberia.

Pocahontas Island was not just part of the Underground Railroad, it was connected to many slave rebellions of the early 1800s, such as those led by Gabriel Prosser and Nat Turner, in the run up to the Civil War and the Battle of the Crater.

We will visit the Pocahontas Island Black History Museum with curator Richard Stewartas, as well as tour, with Sister Lous Long, the original structures on the island, many used as shelters during the Underground Railroad.

The registration fee, which is $65 ($55 for current APPEAL members, $60 for Seniors 65 and over, and $40 for Youth 18 and under), is all inclusive of transportation and the tours.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their own bag/box lunch to their own taste. There will be no lunch provided, but there will be time and location allotted to enjoy your lunch on the Tour.

You must arrive at the Thurgood Marshall Center, 1816 12th St., NW, Washington, DC 20009, to meet the bus by 8:30am PROMPT on Saturday September 8, 2018.
