Ghana's United Nations Declaration of the Transatlantic Slave Trade as the gravest crime against humanity
with Nkechi Taifa.

On March 25th, 2026, the President of Ghana, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, will be introducing a historic resolution at the United Nations General Assembly, declaring the transatlantic trafficking in human beings and racialized chattel enslavement of Africans as the gravest crime against humanity. March 25th is observed globally as the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade. The day before, Ghana will convene a prestigious wreath-laying ceremony at the African Burial Ground National Monument.

Sister Nkechi Taifa, in her most recent visit to Ghana in December, was part of a small delegation of diaspora reparations experts who personally met with President Mahama in preparation for this United Nations resolution. In this presentation, she will discuss these developments, as well as her recent testimony at the United Nations Permanent Forum on People of African Descent, as the U.S. civil society representative on a panel alongside a representative from the African Union and CARICOM. Her testimony highlighted U.S.-based Marcus Garvey, Queen Mother Audley Moore, Malcolm X and other historic visionaries that helped ignite the global movement for reparations that is bearing fruit today. Her advocacy before the United Nations also centered on the power of words, language and evolving new narratives respecting the experiences of Africa and its Historical Global Diaspora at international drafting tables. Join us for this riveting discussion!

Presenter: Nkechi Taifa, Esq., Pan-Africanist Civil and Human Rights Attorney, Scholar-Activist, Talk Show Host, and Author. Nkechi is the Director of the Reparation Education Fund, Inc., is an inaugural Commissioner on the National African American Reparations Commission, and a founder of the National Coalition of Blacks for Reparations in America. She delivered a powerful TEDx talk, “Reparations, An Issue Whose Time Has Come.” A native Washingtonian, Nkechi is the author of the best-seller memoir, "Black Power, Black Lawyer: My Audacious Quest for Justice", and many other books and publications. Her most recent book is "Reparations on Fire: How and Why it’s Spreading Across America."
