Dr. Afia Zakiya is an independent scholar and community activist focused on the sovereignty of Black peoples. She centers Africana studies, Political Ecology and African indigenous and endogenous knowledge systems to shape understandings of Black life and experiences from antiquity to the present. Her more recent work has focused on such areas as the politics of Black Heritage preservation, Climate and Environmental Justice, and Pan African struggles to control land, water, climate, and the built environment. Among other projects, Afia will soon introduce what may be the first comprehensive African centered course on Historic Black Towns and Freedmen's Settlements using a marronage lens which she believes deserves greater visibility in the story of African-American intellectual history.
