Dr. Bernida is a founding member of the DC Pan African Council of Elders. Dr. Thompson also holds membership in the National Association for the Education of Young Children, the National Alliance of Black School Educators, the National Black Child Development Institute, the Council of Independent Black Institutions (CIBI), and the D.C. Pan African Council of Elders. She is also a registered agent of the World Council for Curriculum and Instruction.
Dr. Thompson is the author of the curriculum African-Centered Interdisciplinary Multi-Level Hands-On Science and Black Madonnas and Young Lions: A Rites of Passage for U.S. African Adolescents, and many other publications.
Dr. Thompson is listed in the Who’s Who in American Education. She was also included into the CSU Alumni Hall of Fame in 1998., presented the Umoja On U Award in 2011, Flowers for the Living Award by the UNIA in 2012, Inducted to the DC Council of Elders by LCPAN, awarded by the Worldwide Ministries in 2017, received a Leadership Plaque by the Metro Chapter of BCDI in 2017, received the Nguzo Saba Award by Ujamaa Shule in 2018 and 2023, and received the Woman of the Year Award by Copa Style Magazine in 2018.
