Should We Revisit Corporal Punishment as a Viable Disciplinary Measure in Elementary and perhaps Middle Schools??

In the African American community and others, baby boomers often reflect on the behavior expected by them as children and adolescents versus their children and especially their grandchildren. A common phrase, expressed in many different ways, is that if you “misbehaved” on one end of the block or street, by the time you got home, your parents knew about it and you were going to “get it” a second time.

In today’s classroom and school, outcries of bullying, teacher complaints about student behaviors being dealt with using only a “light slight slap on the wrist”, fighting, bringing weapons to school, and more, another look at corporal punishment could be warranted. Does corporal punishment build competency and trusting relationships?

We will take a look at the history of corporal punishment, varied definitions and opinions from educators, parents, administrators and other professionals. Participants will discuss and share their views as well as recall their personal experiences.
