Discussion of

"After Winter: Sterling Brown"

 with Director Haile Gerima

A reverent and fascinating portrait of Harlem Renaissance poet Sterling Brown.  Eighty-five years old at the time of this filming, Brown reflects on his four decades teach at Howard University and the impact of such figures as Jean Toomer, Langston Huges, and Duke Ellington.

Made by Halie Gerima in collaboration with his own Howard University students, After Winter: Sterling Brown reveals a kindred spirit in Brown, who, like Halie Gerima, draws from the rich histories and transitions of Black culture to inspire his work.

Presenter: Haile Gerima is an award-winning independent filmmaker and professor of film at Howard University in Washington, D.C. Born and raised in Ethiopia, he is a leading member of the Los Angeles School of Black Filmmakers. His films, such as Sankofa, Teza, Bush Mama and Harvest: 3,000 Years, have received wide international acclaim.
