Presenter:

Nana Farika Berhane was born in Kingston, Jamaica to a Garveyite father and a grandmother who descended from the Eastern Maroons. Nana was also mentored in childhood by Daisy Grenidge, the Manager of the Honorable Marcus Garvey’s Black Men Printery in Kingston, Jamaica. She was inspired by folklorist icon Louise Bennett to write in the language of African Jamaican and to empower them though her art. She worked in the Pan African movement with Mrs. Amy Jacques, the wife of the Honorable Marcus Garvey and with Marcus Garvey, Jr., their eldest son. She was a member of the working committee for the Pan African Secretariat in Jamaica and so much more.

Nana is a published writer of stories, a folklorist, poet, playwright, script writer, journalist and arts educator. She has received numerous awards including the 2022 Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award. Her work seeks to illuminate the visions of African philosophies that lead our people to a just, sustainable, holistic union of Africa with her Diaspora.
