The Congo: The Scramble for the Heart of Africa - A Global Minerals Race

The Congo has long been at the center of the battle for control of the African continent, from the 1884/85 Berlin Conference to today's race for critical minerals. After losing six million lives in what the United Nations calls the deadliest conflict in the World since World War Two, the Congo has garnered particular attention from the President of the United States and his billionaire friends. On June 27th, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo signed a peace deal in Washington, DC under the aegis of the Trump Administration.
The Peace Agreement is supposed to lay the foundation for a minerals deal that would usher in greater U.S. investment in Congo's minerals sector with Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, others in the billionaire class, Trump's campaign finance co-chair Gentry Beach, former special forces personnel and US military and intelligence figures taking the lead.
In light of the march towards sovereignty by the Sahel states, what does the potential capture of the heart of the African continent by the US billionaire class bode for the Pan African movement? Is it possible to muster a Pan African response to rescue the Congo from the clutches of the global elites and their local lackies?

Join us for a discussion with Friends of the Congo on these pivotal questions that have implications not only for Congo but Africa as a whole.
