Key Strategies to Build Young Learners: An interactive workshop for the whole family

Building Literacy at Home

This interactive workshop is designed to teach key strategies to build young learners' literacy outside the classroom. Participants will explore how implementing daily routines and rituals around literacy at home can lead to an innate love for reading, an extensive vocabulary, an increase in reading comprehension and fluency and a pathway to post-secondary learning.
While the Literacy in the US is at an alarmingly low rate, statistics for Black children are even more startling.  As African people living in America, many of us continue to suffer from unresolved trauma that has interrupted our family units, the nucleus of our village.  For this reason, Sister Ateya is intentional around making her educational workshops family centered: This workshop is designed to engage the whole family: parents, siblings, aunties, uncles and grandparents.
This family focused workshop explores strategies and provides tools the entire family can use to increase the literacy rate of Black children. In October Sister Ateya will be offering a FREE 10 week Reading Readiness program for early learners. Space is limited. Families attending the Building Literacy at Home workshop will be given priority for selection.

Presenter: Sister Ateya Ball-Lacy is a native Washingtonian, wife and mother. She is a longtime member of the world-renowned Kankouran West African Dance Company and the Ankobea Society. She currently serves as a proud middle school assistant principal. Ateya is the CEO of Ateya Productions, an Education/Edutainment Consulting Firm and the founder and creator of HoodSmart the Urban STEMulus Project and the Illuminate Your Black Brilliance Youth Awards Ceremony.
